From the granddaughter (name?) of Wm L. Mingee and Margaret Mullen:
"Margaret Mullen, the youngest of the Mullen-Ross children, was born nearthe present site of Broadlands, Illinois, March 7, 1860. The oldest ofthe children at that time was but fifteen. Considering the fewconveniences which the early settlers had, it was no small task to cook, sew, mend, and wash; besides a hundred other necessary duties for a largefamily. Margaret, being the baby, by that right was accorded specialtreatment and privileges by her brothers and sisters. Then, unfortunately for the whol family, the mother passed away less than ayear after Margaret's birth. It was a terrible blow to the husband andchildren. Catherine, the oldest child, was just sixteen, but took chargeof the household affairs and taught the younger ones to help with thework.
It was a trying time for the Mullen family; there were six childrenolder than Margaret ranging from 4 years old to 16 years old. To expectCatherine to mother the brood of youngsters like that was out of thequestion. But, there came an opportunity for the care of baby Margaret;a young married couple came to the rescue. They were Joseph Cline andhis wife, Catherine. She was a niece of Mr. Mullen and a daughter ofNancy Ross Summers. They took the baby into their fold and cared for heras if she was their own.
Margaret loved her foster parents and the affection was returned. Her father took his second and third wives after the death of Mary RossMullen, but both marriages proved unsuccessful. In January of 1865, heenlisted in the Union Army for service in the Civil War. After the eventwas concluded, he returned to his family living near Sidell, Illinois, where he continued farming. In 1870 he married Nancy Ross Summers whowas a sister of his first wife. She wished to take Margaret off theCline's hands, but they had grown so attached to the child they would notagree; she was left with the Clines, whom she knew as her mother andfather. She was ten years old and had a definite place in their home andaffections.
Margaret Mullen was a young girl of kindly disposition, loved by allwho knew her. She attended the neighborhood school; enjoyed the tasks ofgetting an education, as well as that of helping with the Cline householdchores. They lived in the rural districts of Vermilion County, farmingall their lives. Thus, Margaret gained the fine attributes of kindnessand sympathy, which made her attractive and a favorite in the social lifeof her community. A young man who lived near was not unaware of herpersonal charm. The liking appeared to be mutual for it was he, WilliamMingee, who won her hand and affection.
On June 3, 1878, Margaret Mullen and William Mingee were married. He was born near Indianola, Illinois, on September 26, 1859, the son ofLittleton R. and Amanda McCrady Mingee. They began housekeeping on afarm near Indianola, living and farming in Vermilion County during theirmarried life. Theirs is an example of perseverance through the years;years, some fruitful and others that tested their faith in nature'shand. They were not unmindful of the fact that this was not the land ofmilk and honey; they knew that it took toil and sweat; and, that therewould be lean years as well as fat, and hewed to the line accordingly. They lived a happy and successful life in the community in which theywere reared. They were loved and respected by all who knew them, and intheir passing, left a legion of friends and relatives to mourn.
Mrs. Mingee passed away December 14, 1903, Mr. Mingee on November25, 1925. Nine children were born in the Mingee family - four girls andthree boys survive their parents. (1950)..."
